Plant source: Turpentine
Place of Origin: China
Function: Lemon-like fragrance, water-insoluble, miscible with ethanol.
Employed as a solvent and diluent for enamels, varnishes, oleo-resins, resin waxes and metal driers. It serves in the manufacture of synthetic resins and rubbers, and is used to compound orange-blossom and citrus oil fragrances, or as a substitute for lemon-type essential oils.
Directed oxidation converts limonene to carvone; in the presence of mineral acids it hydrates to α-terpineol and terpin hydrate; hydrogenation over platinum or chromia gives p-menthane, whereas dehydrogenation yields p-cymene.
It also functions as an oil dispersant, rubber additive and wetting agent.
